MoV Log: This Year in Horror

Sinister

V/H/S

Silent Hill Revelation

Honestly if you are looking for good horror movies to watch this Halloween (in my opinion) replace each of the following with one of these:

Sinister: One Missed Call (Japanese)

V/H/S: Creep Show

Silent Hill Revelation: Dagon

Paranormal Activity 4: FUCKING ANYTHING, but for posteritie's sake maybe Grave Encounters? It's better atleast and worth a watch if you like the genre

  1. They way you keep grouping every horror movie this year in a bunch of crap makes me wonder what you thought of Cabin in the Woods.

    1. Cabin in the Woods is actually in my top 5 movies of the year and probably my second favorite horror movie of all time right behind Evil Dead 2. It did everything right including the trailers.

    2. I'm sorry Lani, I have to respectfully disagree with you and say Cabin in the Woods was utter fail.

    3. Cabin in the Woods was very much everything that is not a fail. Everybody has their opinions though so I would not bash for feeling that way. I enjoyed Sinister personally. It was not the best in any sense but I liked the story and the videos they watched were entertaining. V/H/S was not good. That made me sad. I have to say though I put Dagon in the top 3 worst movies I've ever watched but that's only because I held a grudge with the last 45 minutes of the movie and it's ending. :D

  2. Spoony added jump scares to his Sinister/Paranormal Activity 4 Reviews as well idea must be catchy

  3. Horror movies are getting old and repeated, The Cabin in the Woods was just the opposite. Loved that film too. Especially since Drew Goddard was making it. :D Someone told me that Silent Hill: Revelation's story was poo. I had good hopes for it.

  4. Yep yep! I completely agree with what you were saying near the beginning of the V/H/S vid. That the thing that makes a horror something or other, horrific is if you have an emotional connection with the characters. If you don't have that, you really don't give a damn about what it happening. Therefore the situations don't scare you. But if you feel connected to the characters then the situations "freak you out" bcs you don't like what is happening to the characters! I tried to express this in a review of a "horror" anime on an anime site. But I don't think I made as much sense as what you said.

  5. Dear god its extremely hard to comment here!! The catchphas are extremely hard!

Well my second comment is that if you want to watch an anime that I think is very good based on the emotional connection with the characters like I said in my other post. Then you might want to watch Ghost Hunt. Like I said, it's an horror anime that "I think" is good. But I've watched quite a lot of anime. And there really aren't many good horror ones. But this I think qualifies.

  6. Ok I'm commenting again bcs I kinda want to rant and also bcs... well I've been drinking... So that makes my better judgement go down. So I feel ranting is very appropriate.

Anywho! The anime I commented on was "Another". And it's more of the "gore" type of "horror" than actual horror. I mean its just watching interesting ways people die. If you want to read my review, though I doubt so, then this is the link: http://www.nwanime.com/reviews.php?chid=2576 . It's the one by hothogs45. Don't judge that name... Actually you can bcs it's really stupid. But it's never taken. Though looking at that specific review, it isn't well rated. hmm most of mine usually are.

Oh and I don't want anyone to think that I'm advertising for that site or something. Bcs I'm not. It just happens to be the site that I wrote a review on. Anyways.... I think I'm just droning on... So I'll shut up now. Don't mind me. God I feel stupid now. But you know the drinking soooo I don't care.

If for any reason, anyone happens to want anime suggestions then email me. Ummmm I think my email shows up if you click on SCHWARZENPECKER? I don't know for sure bcs I just now created this account? Anyways. Yeah whatevs? I donno. I'll shut up now...

  7. So, I saw Spoony's vlog for Sinister, and then I saw this one, and they are pretty much exactly the same thing. They both use jumpscares to prove a point, and both of them hit on pretty much the exact same points, with both bringing up their love of lovecraft, and even referencing the same Hitchcock tension quote.

I suggest a crossover mov-log between Spoony and Lani.

    1. They also both suggest One Missed Call instead, which I'll certainly be watching now!

  8. Good reviews. I agree with most what you said.
1 thing though, the haunted carnival and the battle against Elesa, are actually in Silent Hill 3.
Too bad they didn't make the Silent Hill movies more like Silent Hill.

  9. You should look into YellowBrickRoad, Lani. The last five minutes kind of spoil it, but I think you'll like what it does up until that point.

  10. Lani, did you watch the first Silent Hill movie? Because if you didn't, you can watch it for free over at Crackle. Most of the stuff you explained, was already explained in the first movie. So yeah... That tension you mentioned, those who watched the first one, wouldn't have had that anyways. Seriously man, you should always watch the first film(s) before watching the sequel(s). It's just something that has really pissed me off recently with movie goers. My buddy was all pissed and didn't like The Last Airbender because "they left it wide open." Well of course they did, it's a continuing story, there's suppose to be a sequel. Not saying that movie was good, but at least know what you're talking about before you say anything.

    1. I actually did watch the first one years ago when it came out. I guess it speaks to how much of an impact it left on me lol.

  11. …Wow. I watched this shortly after watching Spoony’s videos on Paranormal Activity 4 and Sinister, and Lani, are you sure you didn’t watch those too? Because it is UNCANNY how similar your comments are to his. And I don’t mean just having the same opinions, I mean using a TON of the EXACT SAME examples and phrasing, like “jump scares aren’t scary, they’re startling” (and opening and closing with a screamer (although Spoony talks about screamers at the start of PA4, not Sinistar, but he’s saying the same things there you say here)), mentioning the Alfred Hitchcock bomb under a table example, talking about how much better the creepy face would’ve been without the orchestra sting, wondering how the parents didn’t see the paintings on the daugher’s walls when tucking her in, even comparing the mystery to an easy jigsaw puzzle, and MUCH more. If you really haven’t seen Spoony’s videos yet, you should check them out just to see the eerie similarities; maybe you two should chat about movies sometime, because it seems like your minds work in the same way on the topic.

  12. I just got back from watching Silent Hill: Revelations. I must say, I agree with pretty much everything you said about it.

Now I loved the first one, the first one was awesome. I don't care that not many other people liked it, but I did. It was really well done as far as video game movies goes, the music was great, the images were creepy and disturbing plus they did a good job recreating some almost verbatim moments from the first game in the first film. Even it's ending was great. It was a sad and bitter sweet moment where the mother and daughter survive, go home and you as the viewer realize they haven't escaped at all. Cue sad and pretty music with credits. Oh and the Evil Dead version of the tree rape bit replaced with barb wires towards the end of the film made me laugh a little just because they threw that it to kill the evil cult lady(probably something wrong with me, but meh).

Then you go to the second one and it is complete 180. The only really good part I liked was as you described a Soul Calibur battle between Pyramid Head and the female equivalent of Guldo/Cenobite character. Other than that, just choked with jump scares you see a mile away. I was more annoyed at the music violin shriek music to cue the jump scares that actually scared.

Although I do agree the nurses in the asylum were cool and disturbing. They were essentially playing a deadly game of Red Light/Green Light but with noise, or a bad game of Don't Wake Daddy (Evil Nurse Edition).

Quick question though, have you seen the Red Band Trailer of Evil Dead remake? I think it might be a decent attempt, plus Bruce Campbell is producing so at least he is involved in some manner.
