  1. You really got me excited to see it now! (Seeing in on the 26th with some friends of mine)

I'll admit, the hype was driving me away...but now....so excited to go see it!

  4. Just think high quality visual effects will look like when this looks dated.

  5. This relates to what my sister wrote today in her paper on Imperialism; It's one big international game of who's is bigger. Only with more killing and stuff.

  6. ...I don't think it's possible for me to love you any more than I already do, but I'm gonna try because of your review for this movie. XD

I agree with every single point you made and that thrills me because I was a bit worried you wouldn't like it. I didn't expect it to be all that good but I was thoroughly impressed as you said both with the visuals and the story. Even made an LJ post about it.

And the "Biff" thing made me laugh. I actually equated that character with Kokuum from Disney's Pocahontas. He was supposed to marry Zoe Saldana's character but she fell in love with an outsider and then they got in a fight but at least he came around.

Also, the "New Moon" comment is hilarious. I agree whole-heartedly.

The Commander was indeed the biggest bad ass since Brock Sampson. He was such an asshole and yet I can admit he just bled testosterone and kick ass-ness.

Btw, has anyone pointed out that Sam Worthington (the main character) looks a bit like you with his hair longer and a five o'clock shadow? If so, I will be the 1st to say you remind me of him and vice versa. And that's a good thing because both of you are very, very cute.

  7. i didnt really like the movie the effects were awesome and such but the story my gosh come on its anti colonialism anti america it bush bashed i mean my gosh it could have been better =\

its so expensive to create an avatar yet its even more expensive to fix his legs especialy in 150 years in the future effects wer awsome but story sucked major

  8. Just saw it today. I don't think the corporate guy is as unbelievable as you think. There are plenty of people that will do anything for money.

60 minutes recently did a story on gold found in the African country of Congo. Basically, gold was found there and like 7+ neighboring countries are like "I want that" and just invade their land and steal the gold. This movie sorta reminded me of that except with giant robots.

Anyway, this was a great movie. As expected from James Cameron the action was great. The only thing I can think of for the arrow inconsistency is because they were shooting from below, where in the ending battle they shot from above. At least that's how I remember it...

  10. Lani,
bro i totally agree with u,

aha, u really did feel like it was real, and u got sucked in so much, it was pretty freakin heroic movie,

and like u said, same with me idid want it to be real, ha

  11. while already metioned by Dean, i initialy didnt get the arrow inconsistency while watching but afterwards i though about it and its just a distance, gravity and speed thing.
In the first "battle" the are shooting from the ground upwards and a great distance so when the arrows reach their target theyve lost alot of power. However in the main battle their being shot downwards while moving at fast speed and at a closer distance.

  12. Hey Lani, did the bad ass dude remind you of guts or something? I recently started the manga for Berserk, and NO ONE beats Guts in terms of badassness. Although the dude in this movie seems pretty baddass.

  13. Sorry to correct you Lani, but Jack Sully was the only Marine, the rest of them were Security Operations.

  15. The movie was amazing in Imax (saw it yesterday afternoon). The 3D portions were perfectly integrated into the film, and the visuals were phenomenal. One of the few films that I was willing to go see immediately after having just watched it, it was that epic.

God it was soooooooooo good. I'll never be able to enjoy it as much as I did when I saw it on the big screen. Makes me wish that every movie was in 3D and this well implemented.

GO SEE IT IN IMAX LANI!!!

  16. Its "Dances with Wolves 2.0"

  17. I really liked it. I saw it on Saturday here in Korea and it was just fucking amazing.
Everything looked so beautiful, even the grimy dirty bulldozers. And I had no trouble losing myself in the story, in the completely fantastic world.
The only thing I really had a problem with was the story, but let's be realistic, all of our stories have been told a thousand times over. That being said, I was able to see past that and I can honestly say that Avatar was the best movie I have seen all year. I'll probably see it again over the holidays.
It was definitely a long movie, but it didn't feel long. That's the highest compliment I can pay to any movie.

  18. Saw avatar yesterday it is EPIC

    ReplyDelete
  19. You forgot to mention seeing it in 3D!!!
Seriously, the movie was EPIC and I would really like to see YOUR list for what is BETTER than Avatar as far as 2009 is concerned because I can't recall too many movies this year that came out and were THIS good. I mean I liked stuff like Star Trek, Princess and the Frog, The Hangover, and even UP but NONE of them were as beautifully done as this movie.

BTW, I LOVE your rip on the Twilight movies. I can see why they have their fans but to be completely honest as an old school Buffy/Angel fan I find the new vampire craze pretty shallow with Twilight leading the pack. But hey, I guess they needed something to fill Harry Potter's shoes.

  20. For the arrows, the first encounter it was from quite a lower view point and the second time, during the epic fighting, they were right in front of them a few meters away so the extra force on the arrow from not having to travel so much might have been enough to break through the glass.

I saw the first video before I saw the movie.
Came back and watched both videos after I saw it. I can't agree with you enough.
I went with a friend and we were both speechless afterwards because the movie was just so brilliant and beautiful.

Awesome review Lani. Just like usual.

  21. I agree. It wasn't about being a high-brow, intellectual thing. It was iconic, almost like a modern fable, and it really swept me away.

I will say though, that while there was a lot of the science vs nature thing, most of the actual scientist characters were good guys, which I always appreciate, given that my mother *is* a scientist.

  22. lol i can't beileve you said "it's a pretty movie" I respect that =D. I watched the movie online but i still was like carried away by some of the action. I wanted to see it in the movie theaters to support the movie :( but I was impatient and eh....broke! Though I love the way the Na'vi people look. *Wants her own Avatar now* =_=

lol @ the Coca Cola sip

I would wanna buy this movie, along with District 9 *smile*

  23. *possible avatar spoiler* that lil consistency about the bows i noticed it also but as i watched and thought about it i attributed it to the added velocity of flying at the ships while the ships flew in their direction where the first time around both the shooters and targets were stationary at least this is the theory i came up with

i loved how it didnt just focus on the futuristic man made machine science also but also the astounding capabilities that are in found natural sciences and how we have sacraficed one for the other their planet was basically a huge brain or super computer where we chose to manufacture our own instead that was one thing loved about the movie aside from it being an amazing movie altogether thank you so much for talking about it lani were times where i was just replaying prts of the movie as you said it in my mind

new moon is deffinatly not a necessary movie to see unless you are a girl... or have a girlfriend into that then i guess you have not much choice its some kinda mass hypnosis or brain washing i think targeted specifically at girls

  24. Saw it, it is very good movie. It does mirror Dances with wolves abit, but it is still a good movie.

  27. I went to see this movie opening day, in IMAX 3D. Man, it really is INCREDIBLE, ANY WAY YOU PUT IT, but the IMAX... Oh my God, I can't even begin to tell you. Anyone looking to top this movie, in plot or in the actual computer effects, will definitely face a challange. Best movie I've ever seen.

  30. If you thought that the movie was epic, PLAY THE GAME! I got it for christmas, and the game is AWSOME!!! Not only that, but the game is in 3D! Seriously! I looked on the option menu and it can make it 3D! Its cool! But I think the 3D will be better if you get a bigger screen. I played it on my smallest TV, so its not the best on it, I just need a my bigger TV, just my dad hoggs it during sundays. and thats the only day I get a chance to play it. sucks. but the game is pretty good.

Also, whats you're oppinion on the possibilit of a halo movie?

  31. This is one time I don't quite agree. I found it to be high in appearance and lacking in everything else - acting, plot - things I kind of expect from a movie to make it good. Oh, and as someone who looks at things like an anthropologist and media analyst, SO many stereotypes and totally inappropriate lines and portrayals.

I'd be curious to see what people say about this movie in 10 years time, although I hope by then better actors pay their way through acting school.

  32. I love Avatar. And the entire planet was just so amazing that I would probably have been just as enthralled by "Pandora: the Documentary".

All the characters were some sort of stereotype, and it was a little annoying, but ya--the military guy was a bad-ass and the movie was still really good.

Those supporting characters really needed more depth, but there is no time or place to do that! It's crazy! And Cameron says he has two more Avatar movies in his head "if this one did well". YEYEYEYEYEY!!! Because all the tech is up and running, any more Avatar movies will be simple in comparison.

  33. the whole story was pocahontas he changed the evnironment time and charachter looks. the britsh went to america to get gold the americans went to pandora to get unnobtainium it kind of pissed me of though cause he kept all the lines the same and everything else compare the two and you'll see how same these movies ar
